建前：ギックリ腰という病

それは立てないほどの痛みだった。身体を動かすことができず、寝ても座ってもどんな姿勢を取っていても楽になることがなかった。トイレに入ってもパンツが下ろせない、何とか下ろして用を足したら今度はパンツが上げられない。病院でも生まれて初めて車椅子に乗せてもらい、レントゲンひとつ撮るのに痛みで大声を上げてしまった。入院こそしなかったものの、湿布をもらったり痛み止めの座薬をもらったり、1週間近くのたうちまわることになった。これまでも運動中など、ふとしたタイミングでギックリ腰になったことは何度かあった、しかしそんなものはギックリ腰とも呼べない程度の軽い腰痛だったのだと思い知らされた。

キッカケは引越しだった。新居の床に敷いた布団が合わなくて、それでまず腰に来た。上部が畳になっている収納ベッドを購入し、腰痛が改善するかと思いきや、それがさらにダメを押した。急にマットレスなしになったのが引き金だったのだと思う。当時しばらく通勤はしておらず、仕事はほぼ自宅での作業。プライベートでもほとんど出かけることがなかった私は、極端な話、自宅と食事を買いに行くコンビニとの往復しかしておらず、そのギックリ腰は寝具どうこうよりも明らかに運動不足から来るものだった。

以前辛うじてやっていたゴルフも、クルマが故障し手放してからというもの、誘われることも誘うこともなくなってしまい、もはや身体を動かすときは「ドラムの演奏時のみ」というレベルになってしまっていた。またそれよりしばらく前から「足底筋膜炎」という足の病気も併発していて、毎朝ベットから降りるたびに足裏に激痛が走っていた。これもとても辛い状態だった。

立て続けに、そして折り重なるように訪れるこれらの症状。加齢とともに、知らないうちに、ずいぶん身体にガタが来ていたのだということを思い知らされた。この先の私に必要なことは、身体の柔軟性を高めること、適度な運動を継続して行うこと、そして何より体重を減らすことだった。
